StepVideo: one screen recording in, a finished how-to video out

StepVideo is a Chrome extension and web app made by Easital Technologies Ltd. A user records a workflow once in Chrome, and StepVideo cuts the recording into a how-to video: zooms on clicks, dead time removed, mistakes cut, AI voiceover and captions. The same take also produces a step-by-step guide and a share page.

The problem

A raw screen recording is not a tutorial. It contains pauses and wrong clicks, it has no narration, and turning it into something a customer can follow means editing.

StepVideo is for people who document software. Its site names the use cases: onboarding, support answers, standard operating procedures and product demos. It also says the product is built for solo SaaS founders who need product tutorials. For that audience, recording the workflow is the easy part. The editing is the cost.

What we built

Easital built a Chrome extension that records the workflow and a web app that turns one take into three things to hand over: a how-to video, a step-by-step guide with screenshots and a share page.

Editing happens on a list of steps, not on a timeline.

  • How-to video

The recording is cut automatically, with AI voiceover and word-by-word captions. Exports include 1080p MP4 in 16:9 or 9:16 and caption files in .srt or .vtt.

  • Written guide

The same recording becomes a step-by-step guide with screenshots, which can be exported as a PDF.

  • Share pages and portals

Each tutorial gets a share page. Tutorials can be collected into knowledge-base portals with a brand kit applied.

  • Ask your library

A chat interface answers a question from the user’s own guides and links every source it used.

How it works

StepVideo edits by rule. It applies a fixed set of edit rules to the recording, which the site publishes, and writes narration for each step.

The edit rules, as published on stepvideo.io
RuleWhat StepVideo does
ZoomZooms on a click, up to 1.8×.
MergeClicks less than 2 seconds apart are merged.
Dead airPauses longer than 4 seconds are played at 3× speed.
NarrationWritten per step. Product and company names are read off the recorded page, not guessed from the audio.
  • Redaction before upload. Secrets are removed on the device. The site lists private keys, bearer tokens and JWTs, API keys for widely used services, card numbers that pass a Luhn check, and email addresses.
  • Translation. Voiceovers, captions and content can be translated. The site states 96 languages to record in and 58 to publish.
  • A shorter result. In the demo on the StepVideo home page, a take of 2:07 is cut to 1:29.

Technology

StepVideo is a browser extension, a web application and a media pipeline that combines language models and speech models. Its parts are described here by what they do.

  • AI: language and speech models process recording-derived content (transcripts, step context and audio) to write the narration and produce the voiceover and captions.
  • Capture: a Chrome extension, listed on the Chrome Web Store.
  • Privacy: on-device redaction of secrets before a recording is uploaded.
  • Outputs: 1080p MP4 video, .srt and .vtt captions, PDF guides and hosted share pages.

Status

StepVideo is live at stepvideo.io, and the extension is listed on the Chrome Web Store. It is sold by subscription.

Easital operates the product. The footer of the site states that StepVideo is made by Easital Technologies Ltd., and its terms name Easital as the operator.

The engineering behind StepVideo is the same work Easital offers as a service: integrating several LLM and speech providers in one pipeline, processing media, building a browser extension and operating a subscription product.

Record the workflow. Ship the tutorial.
